How to Turn Your Home into a Christmas Grotto

The Christmas season is here and we couldn’t be more excited here at Lakeland Kitchens! There are so many wondrous elements to this time of year, people are happier and your home feels like the most inviting and happy place on earth. But, there is one way you can make your home even more of a Christmas delight. Create your own grotto and invite Father Christmas into your home!

So, how do you turn part of your home into a winter wonderland?

Choose a Room

Now, this is an integral part of creating your own home grotto. Some rooms in your home may be too small to fit all of your little guests in, while others may be much too large to decorate in a convincing manner. You also need a room that you can repurpose for the length of your part – or even a few days – without disrupting the whole flow of your home. A spare room is ideal, but obviously not an option in a busy family home!

So, the best place for your grotto may be on one side of either your kitchen or dining room. It ties into the warmth atmosphere of the kitchen and has less of an impact on the usability of your home.

Decorations

Decorating the space is undoubtedly one of the most fun aspects of creating your very own winter grotto. It is a good idea to use black card, first of all, to block the lights in the windows in order to create a festive atmosphere. Red or green drapes should be hung around ‘Santa’s Throne’ to create the grotto feeling.

Obviously, you will also need an abundance of baubles and tinsel in order to really ignite the Christmas spirit. Relocating your Christmas tree for the event is also a good idea. The colour scheme should be primarily red and green, fitting into the holiday and allowing your little guests to feel as if they really are in Santa’s home.

Don’t forget to have a pile of presents (preferably real) for your guests to enjoy! After all, what is Christmas without a present or two?

The Costume

Now, the really important part: your Santa Claus costume has to be believable! The children of your family and friends are getting savvier by the day, so make sure you have a costume that won’t create ‘The Great Beard Pulling Incident of 2016.’ It might not be the end of the world, but the children will sure feel like it is for a while if you’re not careful!

Christmas is the most wonderful time of year – so, help make it even more special in 2016 with your very own winter grotto!
